The detox diet has become more popular. Rumor has it that a detox diet can improve your health, promote weight loss, or even "detoxify" your body. The detox diets can come in various forms from juice or smoothies cleanses to eating just one specific food. But...


Does it work?


So far there is no evidence showing the detox diet eliminates toxins from your body. Toxins referred to substances that contribute to health issues such as charred meats, second-hand smoke, and water contaminants.

Some people report feeling better after a detox diet, however, this is more likely because the diet stopped you from consuming highly processed food that has solid fat and sugar. Simply removing these foods from your daily consumption can make you feel a lot better in a few days.


Our bodies come equipped with our own toxin removal system- Kidney and Liver. The kidney helps remove waste products and excess fluid through urine; the Liver converts toxins to harmless substances such as carbon dioxide and water.

To allow your kidney and liver to do the work, we need to make sure to intake enough nutrition. By only having a detox diet or excessively cutting down your food intake, might end up harming your body instead.

How to detox without the "Detox Diet"

Sleep

Sleeping helps your brain to remove toxic waste byproducts that accumulate throughout the day and maintains the brain's normal functioning. It is suggested to sleep over 7 hours every night.


Limit Alcohol intake

Alcohol can severely damage your liver's ability to perform its function. It is recommended to limit your alcohol intake to one drink per day for women and two for men.


Drink more water

Water is a key element in the toxin removal process. It helps transport metabolic waste products and removes them from your blood through urine, breathes, or sweat.


Eat food that is rich in antioxidants

Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals. Free radicals damage the healthy body and are produced by your body when exposed to toxins. Berries, fruits, nuts, vegetables, cannabinoids, and some spices like turmeric are rich in antioxidants.

In short, the detox diet hasn't been proven to remove toxins from your body. The reason some people claim to feel better after a detox diet is most likely because the processed food you consume earlier was no longer in your body. Simply adjusting your food intake and following the tips above can do the magic of removing toxins and having a healthy life!
