Stress and Your Love Hormones

Our hormones are interconnected with our emotions. Oxytocin is known as the "love hormone" that can improve our mental wellness and respond to stress better.

What is Oxytocin?

You can find oxytocin in the part of your brain that regulates emotions, thirst, hunger, sleep patterns, and emotions. It is called the love hormone because the body releases this hormone when having sexual interactions and women commonly release it when breastfeeding. Oxytocin also impacts bonding behavior, social recognition, and other important social functions.

Oxytocin and Stress

Stress triggers the release of hormones to keep us on high alert. This is beneficial throughout our day, they help us to be more focused and improve our performance. However, when the stress hormone remains elevated during nighttime, it will cause trouble sleeping, mood disorder, and more.

This is when oxytocin comes in, it helps manage stress. When oxytocin is present in the bloodstream, it lets an area in the brain responsible for perceiving stress know the threat is no longer there and promotes the production of calming hormones.

How to Increase Oxytocin Production Naturally?

Do yoga & Meditate

Wellness practice such as yoga and meditation offers many benefits such as less anxiety and stress, better sleep, relief depression, and more. Moreover, a study in 2013 suggested yoga can increase oxytocin and a mental condition that causes trouble recognizing facial emotions.

Human/Pet Touch

Having sex, cuddling, kissing, give (or get) a message also naturally boosts oxytocin levels. Hugs can do the trick, so take a few moments for a long hug, no matter with your partner or pet.

Dog lovers, stop what you're doing and pet your dog now! It can not only increase your oxytocin but also your dogs! On a side note, pets' presence can help lower perceived stress and increase oxytocin naturally.

Do Something Nice to Someone

Giving someone a gift or do a random kindness makes them happy, which can make you happy as well. A positive feeling can promote oxytocin release. You don't have to break your bank to show kindness, simply help out a neighbor can do the trick.

Selflove is the best way to manage stress. Learn more about yourself and find the best way to release stress. When you feel the stress becomes hard to handle, take a deep breath and reconnect with whatever matters to you the most.
