What an Antioxidant Really Does?

You've heard about antioxidants, read it from articles that antioxidants are good for our body. What exactly are antioxidants and what does it do?

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are molecules that fight free radicals- the compounds that can cause harm to our body if the levels are too high. Our body produces its antioxidants, including glutathione and alpha-lipoic acid. Antioxidants can also be found in certain food (especially fruits, vegetables, plant-based, whole foods) and supplements(Vitamin C and E). There are also some plant antioxidants such as terpenes that can be found in fruits, herbs, and vegetables.

Free radicals are formed constantly in our bodies to fight infections, but too many free radicals are harmful. When free radicals outnumber antioxidants, it can lead to a state called oxidative stress. Prolonged oxidative stress can damage DNA increases the risk of cancer.

What do Antioxidants do?

Antioxidants are a general term that refers to compounds that can slow and prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals. Free radicals steal electrons from molecules and damage them and antioxidants neutralize free radicals by giving up their electron and stop the cell damage.

The best way to obtain the benefits of antioxidants is by eating food that is rich in antioxidants such as berries, fruit, green tea, dark chocolate. Some people might be taking antioxidants supplements, however, evidence showed that antioxidant supplements could disturb the body's natural defense that might do more harm.
